Meet Katie and Darryl

Darryl Hall

Darryl Edwin Hall was born in Dayton, Ohio on June 2, 1975. He has a very loving family, with two supportive parents (Darryl Sr. and Judy), three older sisters (Lewanne, Joanne, and Dianne), and one younger brother (David).

When he was seventeen, Darryl moved to Reno, Nevada, where he finished high school, received an associate’s degree at Truckee Meadows Community College, and bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Nevada, Reno. He studied psychology and sociology, specializing in gender studies. He also started teaching undergraduate sociology courses, including Principles of Sociology and Racial and Ethnic Groups, during his time at the university.

Darryl has recently moved to Knoxville, Tennessee to pursue a PhD in sociology at the University of Tennessee, where he continues to teach sociology. His scholarly interests include deviance/criminology, environmental studies, and social stratification. When he is not studying or preparing lectures, his favorite pastimes include playing the piano/keyboard, composing music, reading, karaoke, and rollerskating.

Katie Kolt

Mary Catherine Kolt (or Katie) was born in Pawling, NY on Oct. 30, 1983. Her parents are Mimi and Kurt Kolt and she has one younger brother, Tony.

She has lived in Pawling, NY; Overland Park, KS; Palm City, FL; Sparks and Reno, NV and, currently, Knoxville, TN.

Katie has loved writing since the first grade and has written for middle school, high school and local newspapers. She has also long been interested in Web design and computers. Somehow the two merged into online journalism.

This led to Katie's current job as an online producer for the Knoxville News Sentinel. In that position, she updates knoxnews.com nightly with the next-day newspaper's content and produces videos and works with audio, photographs and any other content that can be posted online.

Katie graduated from the Univiersity of Nevada, Reno with a BA in journalism (emphases in print and online media) in Dec. 2005 with a minor in Italian studies. She was able to study abroad while in school, once being quite proficient in Italian.

Her hobbies include knitting; playing Nintendo DS; shopping; cooking; singing karaoke; watching General Hospital, American Idol, Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives; and watching movies.

Katie and Darryl have one pet rabbit, Mocha. Katie's dog-sister lives with her parents.
